do Noval

Quinta do Noval is one of the most historic and influential names in the Douro Valley, a producer whose legacy is inseparable from the evolution of Port itself. Records trace the estate back to 1715, and since then it has stood at the forefront of both tradition and innovation. Located in the heart of the Douro, its vineyards climb steep, terraced slopes overlooking the Pinhão Valley, planted predominantly to indigenous varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão, and Sousão. The estate is particularly renowned for its terroir. Unlike many Port houses that historically sourced fruit from across the valley, Quinta do Noval has long emphasised the importance of its own estate vineyards. The jewel in the crown is the Nacional parcel — a tiny 2-hectare plot of ungrafted vines, untouched by phylloxera, which produces one of the rarest and most legendary Ports in the world. Quinta do Noval has also been a pioneer in shaping the modern image of Port. In 1958, it was the first house to bottle a Late Bottled Vintage (LBV), a category that has since become a cornerstone of the trade. It also distinguished itself by declaring outstanding single-quinta vintage Ports in years when many shippers did not, underscoring its independence and willingness to chart its own course. Ownership passed through several hands during the 20th century, but since 1993 the estate has been part of AXA Millésimes, the wine arm of the French insurance group. Under their stewardship and with the leadership of Christian Seely, Quinta do Noval has invested heavily in vineyard replanting and modernised its winemaking facilities, all while preserving the estate’s traditions and identity. Today, Quinta do Noval produces a full range of Ports — from entry-level Ruby and Tawny wines to LBVs, Colheitas, and declared Vintage Ports — alongside a growing reputation for high-quality still wines from the Douro. Yet its name remains most closely associated with rarity, refinement, and its iconic Nacional Vintage Ports, which stand as a benchmark not only for the house but for the entire Port category.
