FAQs

Yes - the sale of wine held in bond (or other licensed premises) is normally unrestricted. The law around duty paid (i.e. home stored) bottles is a bit complicated, but broadly private individuals who occasionally sell wine they originally purchased for personal use do not require a licence.

Kindly understand that we can’t offer advice on your individual status, and if you’re unsure you can send your wine to Squelch to sell on your behalf from our licensed premises on a consignment basis.

All users of the platform must be 18 or over.

Any! You can list both bonded and duty paid (loose or home-stored) bottles on Squelch, in any pack size, in any format, and in any condition. So whether you’re selling a pristine case of Romanée Conti, or a dusty old bottle of port you found in your granny’s garage, Squelch is for you.

The price at which you list is up to you, but the intelligent pricing assistant on the upload page will help you get it just right. It’ll show you the market price, and the adaptive dial will let you know just how competitive your intended price is in the real world.

Remember, you will be competing with the trade – merchants and retailers. You need to think about why a potential buyer will purchase from you rather than from a business. Unless your wine is unique or very rare, then this decision will likely be based on price alone. So the more you undercut the competition, the more likely you are to attract a buyer.

We always recommend having a peep at the excellent price comparison website winesearcher.com in advance.

If your wine is stored in a H.M. Customs & Excise bonded warehouse, then you should list as In Bond. Any bottles physically in your possession should be listed as Duty Paid. For a detailed explanation of In Bond vs Duty Paid, please click here

Listing an advert is free – you’ll only charged a commission of 5% + VAT when a sale is made.

For in-bond transfers, just instruct your bonded warehouse to arrange the transfer on your behalf. For loose bottles, wrap them securely and use any major courier service for delivery. Click here to view our delivery guide for tips on setting delivery charges and safely packaging bottles.

No, not at all. Dusty old treasures that lost their label years ago are as welcome as pristine cases of Grand Cru Classé Bordeaux. The key is to give an honest, frank description with as much information as possible. Fine wine lovers are often very prepared to take a punt, but they won’t like nasty surprises.

No. As this is a C2C marketplace you don’t have any ongoing liabilities after delivery. And on the whole fine wine buyers are very used to these spiritual terms of engagement – buying older bottles is very much caveat emptor. That’s said, you do very much have a responsibility in the spirit of the Squelch community to advertise your wine honestly, including any faults or matters that worry you. If the wine that turns up is materially different to your advert, then your buyer might have grounds to send it back.

You will be able to show potential buyers where the wine is lying and will be given the option of offering in-bond and/or home deliveries. For the latter, your buyer will reimburse you for duty and VAT if applicable.

Incredibly so. When a buyer pays for their purchase, Squelch holds onto their money whilst you organise delivery. In the normal course of events Squelch will release funds to you a set number of days after you confirm on the system that the wine has been dispatched. If your buyer has added the Buyer Protection Service they’ll be given the opportunity to confirm that they’ve received the wine and are happy with it before their funds are released to you. But in any event, neither party can have both the wine and the money at the same time.

Our escrow service is provided by Mangopay S.A. which is a UK Licensed and Regulated Financial Institution.

Nope, not at all. You can remove your wine or adjust your advert at any time. You can offer your wine for sale concurrently elsewhere too. But once somebody buys your wine, you are contractually obligated to fulfil the order.

Yes you can. The intelligent prompt system on the listings page is programmed with a large variety of whiskies and other fancy spirits. Even some beers. The pricing assistant works pretty well on many whiskies too.

In principle yes. Although your terms of engagement and the rights of your buyers will be different. You won’t be able to piggy back Squelch’s T&Cs, but you’ll still have to abide by them. Please contact us on cheers@squelch.wine so we can talk you through your options before listing.
