Krohn

Krohn (Wiese & Krohn) is a historic Port house founded in 1865 by two Scandinavians—Theodor Wiese and Dankert Krohn—and long regarded as a specialist in wood-aged Ports, especially Colheita (single-harvest Tawny). The firm matured its wines in traditional lodges at Vila Nova de Gaia and today sits within The Fladgate Partnership, with estate fruit anchored by Quinta do Retiro Novo in the Rio Torto valley of the Cima Corgo. Old, terraced vineyards on schist—field blends of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinta Cão—supply the backbone for both long cask ageing and occasional bottle-matured styles. Krohn’s calling card is its deep library of Colheitas: Ports aged for decades in seasoned casks that trade primary fruit for walnut, citrus-peel and toffee complexity while retaining freshness and a clean, dry finish. Alongside these sit classic Aged Tawnies (10/20/30/40 Year) blended for balance and line. On the ruby side, Krohn bottles Late Bottled Vintage (LBV)—often unfiltered, with vintage character ready earlier—and declares Vintage Port in strong years, drawing on Retiro Novo and long-term grower partnerships for structure and perfume. House style is clarity over heaviness. Fermentations are managed for pure fruit and fine tannins before fortification with clean, neutral spirit; cask regimes favour older wood so oak reads as polish and oxygen exchange rather than flavour. The best Krohn Ports finish long and savoury—sweetness checked by acidity and that unmistakable Douro schist thread—making them as compelling at table as they are for contemplation. At a glance: Colheita specialist with a deep back catalogue of single-harvest Tawny. Aged Tawny (10/20/30/40 Year) for layered, nutty complexity. LBV for early, affordable vintage character; Vintage Port in declared years for the cellar. Across styles, expect clarity, freshness and a long, dry, schist-etched finish.
