Founded in 1999 by Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz, Two Hands Wines was created with a clear vision: to showcase the diversity of Australian Shiraz by sourcing fruit from the country’s greatest regions and expressing each site’s unique character. In just a short time, the estate has grown into one of the most recognisable names in Australian fine wine, consistently earning acclaim both domestically and abroad.
Based in the Barossa Valley, Two Hands began by working with growers across South Australia, selecting parcels from key Shiraz regions such as Barossa, McLaren Vale, Padthaway, Clare Valley, and later Heathcote in Victoria. This regional approach set the winery apart, highlighting the impact of terroir on Shiraz and giving drinkers a “tour of Australia in a glass.” Over time, the team also developed estate-owned vineyards, particularly in the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, further strengthening quality and control.
The Two Hands philosophy emphasises meticulous attention to detail. All fruit is hand-harvested, sorted by hand, and vinified in small batches, with French oak used in place of the American oak traditionally favoured in much of Barossa. The aim is clarity of fruit, balance, and vineyard expression, rather than sheer power. This modern style of winemaking has helped Two Hands wines stand out on the global stage.
The portfolio is structured to reflect this philosophy. The flagship “Icon” range includes Ares (a powerful Barossa Shiraz) and Holy Grail (from their prized estate vineyard), while the “Single Vineyard” series showcases distinctive terroirs like Bella’s Garden (Barossa Valley), Lily’s Garden (McLaren Vale), and Max’s Garden (Heathcote). At the entry level, the “Picture Series” offers accessible wines with the same commitment to regional identity and quality.
Within two decades, Two Hands has firmly established itself as a benchmark for modern Australian Shiraz. The wines are celebrated for their purity, precision, and ability to express terroir, while the brand’s adventurous spirit and international outlook have made it one of the country’s most successful and respected producers.
