Bellevue Mondotte

Bellevue Mondotte is one of Saint-Émilion’s true hidden treasures, a tiny estate that produces some of the most powerful and sought-after wines on Bordeaux’s Right Bank. Owned by Gérard Perse of Château Pavie fame, this jewel-box vineyard has, in just a few decades, earned a reputation far larger than its modest size. The vineyard covers just over two hectares, perched high on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, with vines averaging more than 50 years of age. The plantings are dominated by Merlot, with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, all rooted in thin, stony soils that force the vines to struggle and yield fruit of exceptional depth. The exposure and elevation of the site give Bellevue Mondotte its hallmark intensity and freshness. Since Perse acquired the property in 2001, farming has been meticulous and yields have been kept strikingly low—often just 20 hectolitres per hectare. This means annual production rarely exceeds 300 to 400 cases, placing Bellevue Mondotte among the rarest Bordeaux wines on the market. Each berry is hand-harvested with extraordinary care, and the winemaking, guided by consultant Michel Rolland, combines small-batch fermentations with malolactic conversion in new French oak and extended élevage of up to 24 months. The resulting wine is monumental yet refined—layered with dark fruit, graphite, and floral notes, underscored by a limestone-driven minerality. While undeniably rich, Bellevue Mondotte retains remarkable balance and the capacity to age for decades, evolving into a wine of haunting complexity. For collectors, Bellevue Mondotte is more than just a Saint-Émilion—it is a statement of rarity and perfectionism. With such limited production, every bottle is a treasure, offering the chance to experience one of Bordeaux’s most exclusive and dazzling wines.
