Le Marquis de Calon Ségur is the château’s second wine, designed for earlier approachability while reflecting the grand vin’s Cabernet-driven character. Riper Merlot often plays a larger role here, bringing supple texture and immediate charm to Saint-Estèphe’s cool, gravel-and-clay frame. Expect violet and red-to-black cherry, cassis and a touch of graphite, with a refined, gently savoury finish.
Winemaking mirrors the first wine on a parcel-by-parcel basis: careful sorting, measured extraction in temperature-controlled vats, and élevage in French oak with a moderate proportion of new barrels. Oak reads as polish and cadence rather than flavour, keeping fruit purity and freshness to the fore. The result is sleek and precise—silky tannins, a lively core, and length without heaviness.
Serve at 16–18 °C in Bordeaux stems; young bottles benefit from a brief 30–45 minute decant to unfurl the mid-palate and lift aromatics. It is a versatile food partner: roast chicken with thyme, lamb cutlets with rosemary, beef rib, mushroom ragù, or firm cheeses such as aged Comté—the wine’s freshness and fine tannins balance richness cleanly.
Cellaring is rewarding but modest compared to the grand vin. Most vintages drink beautifully from 3–5 years after harvest and cruise for 8–12 in stronger seasons, gaining cedar, tobacco leaf and sweet earth while retaining that signature Calon perfume and poise. A silk glove over Saint-Estèphe bones—graceful, engaging, and unmistakably Calon.
