Cantemerle

Château Cantemerle is a historic estate situated in the northern part of the Haut-Médoc, where it has been producing wine for centuries. The estate is one of Bordeaux's oldest, with records of its winemaking dating back to the 12th century. However, it rose to prominence in 1855 when it was classified as a Fifth Growth in the official Bordeaux Classification, a recognition it continues to uphold. The estate spans 94 hectares of vineyards, planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (30%), along with smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The combination of gravelly soils and the influence of the nearby Gironde River contributes to the ideal growing conditions for these varietals. The estate's ownership by the SMA Group since 1981 has been marked by substantial investment in both the vineyards and winemaking facilities, elevating the quality of the wines while maintaining respect for traditional practices. Château Cantemerle is committed to sustainable viticulture, focusing on organic practices and minimizing the environmental impact of its operations. The winemaking process blends modern techniques with respect for tradition, including fermentation in both stainless steel and wooden vats. The estate also produces Les Allées de Cantemerle, a second wine made from younger vines, which is more accessible and fruit-forward compared to the grand vin. While Château Cantemerle may not have the highest profile among Bordeaux's First Growths, its wines consistently stand out for their quality, offering a blend of elegance, structure, and aging potential. With a strong commitment to sustainable farming and modern winemaking, Château Cantemerle continues to produce wines that are both reliable and reflective of the unique terroir of the Haut-Médoc.
