La Conseillante

Château La Conseillante is one of the most esteemed producers in Pomerol, an appellation known for its powerful and elegant Merlot-based wines. With a history dating back to the 18th century, the estate has built a reputation for producing wines that capture the essence of the Pomerol terroir, characterized by its gravelly and clay-rich soils. The estate spans 12 hectares and is located on the prestigious plateau of Pomerol, where the vines benefit from the warmth of the soil and the moderating influence of the nearby Dordogne River. Today, the estate is owned by the Nicolas family, who have been in control since 1971, and has overseen significant improvements in both vineyard management and winemaking. The estate follows biodynamic practices and aims to express the distinctiveness of its terroir through minimal intervention. The primary focus is on Merlot (about 80%), with smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc rounding out the blend. The wines are crafted with precision, aging in new French oak barrels, contributing to their complexity while still showcasing the rich fruit flavors of the Pomerol region. Château La Conseillante produces a range of wines, but the grand vin—Château La Conseillante itself—remains one of the most revered examples of Pomerol. The estate also produces Les Grandes Vignes de La Conseillante, a second wine that reflects the style of the first wine but is more accessible and approachable in its youth.
