Domaine de Montille is one of Burgundy’s most admired family estates — a domaine that embodies both the intellectual rigour and quiet soul of the Côte d’Or. Based in Volnay, with holdings stretching from Puligny-Montrachet to Vosne-Romanée, de Montille is a name that commands respect for its precision, restraint, and unwavering sense of place.
The family’s winemaking roots go back to the 18th century, but the modern era began under Hubert de Montille, who took charge in the 1950s. At a time when Burgundy was struggling for identity, Hubert pursued purity, low yields, and minimal intervention, championing a style that valued elegance and longevity over flashiness. His wines were tight-knit in youth, sometimes austere, but age has proven him right — they remain models of classical balance.
Today, the estate is led by Étienne de Montille, Hubert’s son, who has refined that legacy with both energy and sensitivity. Under Étienne, the domaine expanded significantly, now covering around 35 hectares, including enviable parcels in Volnay, Pommard, Beaune, Corton, and Vosne-Romanée, as well as white vineyards in Puligny- and Meursault. Farming is certified organic and biodynamic, and every decision — from pruning to harvest — is guided by the rhythm of the vineyard rather than the calendar.
In the cellar, winemaking remains deliberate and transparent. Reds are typically fermented with a significant proportion of whole clusters, depending on vintage and site, to enhance perfume and texture. Extraction is gentle, new oak is used sparingly, and the wines are aged for 14–18 months before bottling with minimal filtration. Whites are treated with the same precision: long lees ageing, subtle oak, and a laser focus on minerality.
Stylistically, de Montille wines are defined by purity, tension, and energy. They are never heavy-handed — instead, they offer layered detail and a quiet depth that rewards time and attention. With age, their reds develop haunting complexity — rose petal, spice, sous-bois, and savoury warmth — while their whites become chiselled and saline, with a crystalline edge.
Across generations, Domaine de Montille has remained a beacon of authenticity. In a region where fashion changes quickly, it continues to make wines that speak softly but leave a lasting impression — wines of truth, grace, and longevity
