The story of Domaine Ponsot begins in 1872 when land owner William Ponsot acquired a plot of vineyards in Clos des Roche in the village of Morey Saint Denis, as well as Clos des Monts Luisants The vineyards of Ponsot were hard hit by Phyloxera and all the vines were pulled up and replanted. Some of the Aligote vines planted then are still producing. Hippolyte Ponsot, who succeeded William, undertook massive replanting of Pinot Noirs in the 20s and 30s, as the quality of the plants replanted just after the phylloxera epidemic was not up to his standards. The estate has always combined tradition and modernity to duly serve its vines, wines and customers. At the end of the 20th century, the pace of innovation quickened, and the estate acquired cutting-edge winemaking equipment: using temperature control, inert gas, and a vertical press. The atypical position of the vines at the top of the “Monts-Luisants” hillside, bordered by the forest, gives Morey Saint Denis “Cuvée des Grives” a great deal of freshness and tension. Sustained and structured, it strikes just the right balance between full body, fruit expression, velvety texture and minerality. The wine is kept in 20year old barrels for 14 months with no new oak barrels used. This is a wine that ages well and will go on for decades. The bottle has been stored by a collector in Sussex since release, until recently. The level is 1cm and appears to be in excellent condition and presentation. A few minor wine rack nicks but overall very good. Currently lying in a wine merchants premises.
