Rare Champagne is one of the most prestigious names in the region, a cuvée that began life within Piper-Heidsieck but has since evolved into its own luxury brand. First created in 1985 from the legendary 1976 vintage, Rare was conceived as a one-off bottling to mark Piper-Heidsieck’s bicentenary. Its success led to a new tradition: Rare would be made only in years of exceptional quality, cementing its place among the most exclusive Champagnes.
The philosophy of Rare is built around rarity and excellence. Since its inception, fewer than a dozen vintages have been released, each chosen for its singular character and capacity to age. The wines are crafted under the direction of Régis Camus, long-time chef de cave at Piper-Heidsieck and a multiple “Sparkling Winemaker of the Year” award winner. His vision has shaped Rare into a Champagne known for elegance, precision, and extraordinary longevity.
The Rare style is defined by the interplay between richness and finesse. Chardonnay forms the backbone of the blend, often making up more than two-thirds of the cuvée, with Pinot Noir adding depth and structure. Extended ageing on lees — often over a decade before release — gives the wines their hallmark complexity, creamy texture, and ability to age for decades more in bottle.
Equally distinctive is Rare’s presentation. The bottles are adorned with a gold tiara motif designed by jeweller Arthus-Bertrand, reinforcing its identity as a luxury Champagne positioned alongside the finest prestige cuvées of the region.
Though it was born at Piper-Heidsieck, Rare today is positioned as its own maison, standing alongside but separate from its parent. With limited releases, jewel-like packaging, and a reputation for purity and refinement, Rare Champagne is considered one of the most collectible prestige cuvées on the market.
