From the forested fringe of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s southern plateau, Domaine Giraud’s Les Galimardes captures the wild heart of the region through vines planted on deep clay, sand, and the classic galets roulés — the rounded river stones that define the appellation.
The vineyard is a single parcel within the Galimardes lieu-dit, farmed organically and biodynamically since the late 2000s. The vines, many of them over 100 years old, produce fruit of remarkable intensity and maturity — particularly Grenache, which forms about 90% of the blend, with the remaining 10% Syrah providing depth and structure.
Winemaking is deliberate and refined: the Grenache is destemmed and aged in concrete or stainless tanks to preserve freshness and purity, while the Syrah undergoes ageing in French oak, a small portion new, to add texture without overshadowing the fruit.
In the glass, Les Galimardes opens with bold, dark fruit aromas — damson plum, black cherry, and wild blackberry — layered with blue fruits, crushed garrigue, and smoky, earthen undertones. The palate is full-bodied but not heavy: the old vines supply concentration, the clay soils give tension, and the galets lend a glowing warmth. Tannins are firm yet velvety, and the finish carries peppery spice, dried herbs, and iron-tinged minerality that lingers long.
This is a wine built for time. The structure and depth suggest a cellaring horizon of 10–15 years, with top vintages easily stretching into decades. For now, it offers a seductive balance — Rhône richness and modern polish in equal measure.
Domaine Giraud Les Galimardes stands as a testament to what old vines, unique soils, and sensitive winemaking can achieve in Châteauneuf-du-Pape: a wine with presence, refinement, and the kind of southern Rhône soul that stays with you.
