Giuseppe Mascarello e Figlio stands among Barolo's most revered houses, with a legacy deeply rooted in the Monprivato vineyard of Castiglione Falletto. The estate traces its origins to 1881, when Giuseppe Mascarello established the family’s presence in Monchiero. In 1904, his son Maurizio acquired a parcel in iconic Monprivato, beginning a lineage that would make the estate synonymous with precision, elegance, and age-worthy Barolo.
Today, the estate is run by Mauro Mascarello, who took the helm in 1967 and re-united the family’s holdings, bringing Monprivato under single-estate ownership. Monprivato now spans approximately 6 hectares, a monopole and one of Barolo’s most prestigious crus, planted almost entirely to Nebbiolo – especially the local “Michét” clone known for its aromatic complexity and refinement.
Masksarello wines are shaped by tradition and restraint. Fermentations are long, sometimes using submerged cap methods, and élevage takes place in large Slavonian oak botti, often for 30 to 48 months depending on the cuvée. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered, standing as rigorous expressions of their site.
The estate’s flagship bottlings include:
Barolo Monprivato
Barolo Ca’ d’Morissio Riserva (sourced from a specially selected plot within Monprivato)
Barolo Villero (Castiglione Falletto)
Barolo Santo Stefano di Perno
They also produce varietal wines like Barbera d’Alba, Langhe Nebbiolo, and Freisa, each showing the same commitment to heritage and depth.
Giuseppe Mascarello e Figlio is celebrated as a guardian of traditional Barolo, crafting wines of sublime structure, resonance, and grace. The estate continues a family legacy where terroir speaks with clarity, and patience in the cellar is always rewarded.
