The Modern Face of Ribera del Duero

Born from the legacy of Vega Sicilia, Alión is a wine that represents a more modern, powerful, and immediate expression of Ribera del Duero, yet still carries the hallmarks of precision and depth that define the great wines of the estate. Introduced in 1991 as a separate project, Alión was created to showcase pure Tempranillo in a contemporary style, focusing on concentration, finesse, and earlier approachability, while still retaining exceptional aging potential. Sourced from over 130 hectares of estate vineyards, including sites both within and outside the Vega Sicilia property, Alión is made entirely from Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), capturing the essence of the region’s bold, structured fruit. The vineyards sit at 750 meters above sea level, benefiting from warm days and cool nights, which help retain freshness and balance in the wine. Unlike Vega Sicilia’s long-aged, multi-decade wines, Alión follows a more streamlined and modern winemaking philosophy, aged for 12–14 months in 100% new French oak barrels, before resting in bottle for several years before release. On the nose, Alión is rich and expressive, with intense aromas of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, cedar, and toasted spices, wrapped in hints of vanilla, espresso, and crushed violets. It is opulent and seductive, yet still retains a sense of refinement and energy that makes it unmistakably part of the Vega Sicilia family. On the palate, Alión is full-bodied and layered, offering deep flavors of blackcurrants, dark chocolate, sweet tobacco, and warm spice, supported by firm yet polished tannins and a core of fresh acidity. Unlike Único, which demands decades of aging, Alión is crafted for earlier enjoyment, yet still has the structure to evolve beautifully for 15–20 years in the best vintages. With its bold, modern appeal and unmistakable pedigree, Alión bridges the gap between tradition and innovation in Ribera del Duero, making it a go-to wine for those seeking power, precision, and the unmistakable quality of Vega Sicilia in a more immediate form.
