Gusbourne

Gusbourne is one of the brightest names in English sparkling wine, combining heritage with a thoroughly modern vision. Though the estate’s origins date back to the 15th century, its contemporary story began in 2004, when entrepreneur Andrew Weeber set out to create world-class sparkling wines from the English countryside. From the start, the aim was ambitious but clear: to rival the finest sparkling wines globally, while expressing the distinct character of Kent and West Sussex. The foundation of Gusbourne’s success lies in its vineyards. With more than 90 hectares under vine, planted exclusively to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, the estate is firmly committed to the traditional Champagne grapes. Its Kent vineyards benefit from sheltered, south-facing slopes and a warm microclimate, while the West Sussex sites offer chalk-rich soils that lend finesse and minerality. Every grape is estate-grown, a rarity in English wine, ensuring absolute control over quality and style. In the winery, the approach is patient and uncompromising. Gentle pressing, careful fermentations, and extensive lees ageing are used to build depth and complexity. The wines are released only when deemed ready, typically after several years of maturation. This attention to detail yields sparkling wines of remarkable balance — crisp acidity layered with ripe orchard fruits, subtle autolytic notes, and a precision that speaks clearly of both grape and place. Gusbourne’s range highlights both tradition and innovation. The Brut Reserve offers a benchmark expression of the house style: fresh, vibrant, and impeccably balanced. Blanc de Blancs and Blanc de Noirs showcase single-varietal focus, with tension and structure that reward cellaring. The Rosé brings elegance and delicacy, while limited vintage releases and single-vineyard bottlings underline the estate’s drive to push boundaries. From its historic roots to its present-day acclaim, Gusbourne has redefined what English sparkling wine can be. International recognition — including consistent praise from critics and sommeliers — confirms its standing among the best. Yet at heart, the estate remains true to its founding ambition: to craft wines that stand shoulder to shoulder with the world’s greatest, while reflecting the unique landscapes of England’s vineyards.
