Las Pizarras Chardonnay is one of Chile’s most acclaimed white wines, a striking example of how the country’s coastal terroirs can deliver precision and depth to rival the world’s greatest Chardonnays. Introduced with the 2014 vintage, it comes from the Aconcagua Costa sub-region, a few kilometres from the Pacific Ocean, where cool sea breezes and ancient slate-rich soils (“pizarras” in Spanish) define the style.
The fruit is sourced from meticulously selected hillside parcels within the Errázuriz estate, planted on decomposed slate and schist mixed with clay and sand. These thin, stony soils limit vigour and yield berries of exceptional concentration while preserving vibrant natural acidity. The maritime climate brings cool daytime temperatures and cold nights, allowing a long, slow ripening season that builds flavour complexity without excess weight.
Winemaking is aimed at transparency and texture. Grapes are hand-harvested, gently pressed, and fermented in a mix of French oak barrels (mostly used) with a small proportion of new oak for subtle spice. A significant portion of the wine undergoes natural fermentation with ambient yeasts, and lees are stirred during ageing to enhance mouthfeel and complexity.
In the glass, Las Pizarras Chardonnay offers aromas of white peach, citrus blossom, and green apple, layered with notes of wet stone, hazelnut, and a faint saline edge from the coastal air. The palate is taut and precise, with crystalline acidity framing flavours of lemon curd, pear, and chalky minerality. The finish is long and vibrant, carrying a subtle hint of smoky reduction reminiscent of top white Burgundy.
While wonderfully expressive on release, the wine rewards 5–7 years of cellaring, gaining creamy texture and deeper savoury nuances while retaining its signature freshness. Las Pizarras Chardonnay is a defining statement from Errazuriz — proof that Chile’s coastal vineyards can produce Chardonnay of world-class pedigree and age-worthy finesse.
