Poderi Aldo Conterno is one of the most venerable and respected Barolo producers, founded in 1969 by Aldo Conterno after he parted ways with his brother at the family’s renowned Giacomo Conterno estate. Having spent time in the United States, Aldo returned with a vision of combining tradition with thoughtful innovation — refining tannin structure and adopting gentler extraction without compromising Barolo’s authenticity.
The estate is located in Monforte d’Alba’s Bussia cru, where it owns around 25 hectares of south- to southwest-facing vineyards at roughly 400 metres altitude. These marl, clay, and limestone soils, rich in calcium and iron, give the wines their hallmark depth, power, and longevity.
Today, the winery is run by Aldo’s three sons — Franco, Stefano, and Giacomo — who continue to uphold their father’s philosophy. The vineyards are farmed sustainably, without herbicides or fertilizers, and the wines are never fined or filtered, ensuring purity and terroir expression in every bottle.
Poderi Aldo Conterno is most celebrated for its single-vineyard Barolos: Romirasco, Cicala, and Colonnello, each a unique expression of the Bussia hillside. Its most iconic bottling is the Granbussia Riserva, first produced in 1971. Made only in exceptional vintages, Granbussia blends fruit from Romirasco, Cicala, and Colonnello into a wine of extraordinary complexity and longevity, released only after extended ageing.
The range also includes a Nebbiolo from younger vines, Il Favot, the Barbera d’Alba Conca Tre Pile, Chardonnay bottlings like Bussiador and Printanié, and smaller cuvées such as Quartetto and the sparkling Freisa, Bussianella.
Poderi Aldo Conterno stands at the crossroads of tradition and progress — a house that produces Barolos of graceful power and ageworthiness. Aldo’s legacy as one of the Langhe’s greatest winemakers lives on, and his family continues to craft wines that remain benchmarks of the region.
