Barolo “Cicala” is one of Poderi Aldo Conterno’s signature single-vineyard expressions, and a true reflection of mastery in capturing Bussia’s distinct terroir. Planted on the clay-rich slopes of Monforte d’Alba's Bussia cru, these vines—averaging 45–50 years of age—produce deeply concentrated Nebbiolo with a penetrating sense of structure and warmth.
Cicala sits just below the celebrated Cru of Romirasco, blessed with less sand and more clay, yielding Barolos that are fuller-bodied and richly fashioned. The name "Cicala" translates to "frog" or "cicada," named for the little creatures that fill the vineyard midday.
Winemaking here remains steadfast in tradition. Fermentation includes a long 30-day maceration in stainless steel, followed by careful racking and extended élevage in large Slavonian oak botti for 28–30 months. The result is a Barolo of poise—powerful yet poised, deeply structured but rarely aggressive.
In youth, Cicala offers intense aromas of black cherry, plum, and dark spices, complemented by mineral undertones and hints of earth. The palate is equally commanding: dense dark fruit, robust yet fine-grained tannins, and vibrant acidity propel a long, resonant finish. Critics describe it as “ultra-fine tannins, bright acidity, beautifully poised,” noting its “class and precision.”
While approachable within a few years—especially with decanting—Cicala truly shines with aging, developing tertiary layers of leather, truffle, dried herb, and spice over 10–20 years. It’s a wine that commands patience and rewards it in full measure.
Poderi Aldo Conterno’s Barolo Cicala is more than a Cru Barolo—it is a narrative of time, soil, and steadfast artisanal care. A wine that embodies the balance of tradition and grace: powerful, poised, and deeply expressive of the Langhe’s soul.
