Massolino

Massolino is a benchmark Barolo estate based in Serralunga d’Alba, where ancient sandstones and marls give Nebbiolo its famed combination of perfume, mineral drive and long, fine tannins. Founded by Giovanni Massolino in the late 19th century and still family-run today, the winery has grown around a core of top Serralunga vineyards while holding to a classical, vineyard-first philosophy. The style is transparent and precise: ripe but not heavy fruit, a cool, stony thread, and structure built for graceful ageing. The heart of the range is Barolo from Serralunga, expressed through village and single-vineyard wines. Margheria shows rose, red cherry and a taut, chalky finish; Parafada brings darker fruit and a touch more breadth; and the flagship Vigna Rionda—bottled as a Riserva and released later—adds layered depth, balsamic nuance and exceptional longevity. Massolino also bottles Parussi from Castiglione Falletto, a contrast in voice that highlights red-fruited elegance and spice over Serralunga’s firmer line. Viticulture is careful and low-intervention, with hand work by parcel, strict selection at harvest, and a steady move toward gentler farming to protect freshness and aromatic lift. In the cellar, fermentations are measured rather than aggressive, macerations are long enough to draw fine tannins, and ageing takes place primarily in large Slavonian oak casks so wood reads as cadence and length, not flavour. The aim is to let site and season speak clearly in the glass. Beyond Barolo, Massolino produces characterful Langhe Nebbiolo, vibrant Barbera d’Alba and Dolcetto d’Alba, plus a fragrant Moscato d’Asti—each made with the same emphasis on clarity, balance and drinkability. These wines provide earlier windows into the house style while the Barolo rests. Cellaring reflects the structure of the crus. Village Barolo usually opens from five to seven years; Margheria and Parafada reward a decade; Vigna Rionda Riserva comfortably runs 15–20+ years in strong vintages, gaining truffle, cedar and sweet-earth complexity without losing lift. For anyone scanning “Massolino Serralunga Barolo,” expect classical Langhe character rendered with polish and restraint—site-faithful wines built to evolve.
