Masseria Altemura’s Sasseo Primitivo Salento is a striking expression of Puglia’s most famous grape, crafted to capture the warmth, richness, and Mediterranean character of the Salento peninsula. Its name, “Sasseo,” refers to the stony, limestone-rich soils of the estate, which lend structure and freshness to balance the grape’s natural opulence.
Sourced from estate vineyards bathed in the intense southern sun and moderated by sea breezes from both the Adriatic and Ionian coasts, the Primitivo grapes achieve full ripeness while retaining vibrancy. Low yields and careful hand-harvesting ensure fruit of concentration and purity, which is then vinified to highlight bold fruit expression and supple texture.
In the glass, Sasseo is deep ruby red with garnet reflections. Aromas of ripe blackberry, plum, and cherry compote are layered with hints of spice, licorice, and cocoa. On the palate it is full-bodied and velvety, delivering generous dark fruit richness framed by soft tannins and balanced acidity. A period of oak ageing rounds out the wine, adding subtle notes of vanilla and sweet spice without overshadowing its fruit-driven core.
Sasseo is crafted for immediate enjoyment but can also evolve over a few years, gaining savoury complexity while maintaining its plush, approachable style. It is a quintessential Salento red — bold, sun-soaked, and expressive, yet polished enough to stand confidently on the international stage.
