Torres

Familia Torres is not just one of Spain’s most important wine producers — it is one of its great dynasties. Founded in 1870 in Penedès, Catalonia, the Torres family has spent five generations shaping the course of Spanish wine, transforming it from a regional craft into a globally respected art form. Their name is now synonymous with quality, sustainability, and a restless pursuit of innovation — all while maintaining deep roots in the land. The story began when Jaime Torres Vendrell established the winery in Vilafranca del Penedès, at a time when phylloxera was devastating vineyards across Europe. From the start, Torres showed resilience and vision: replanting vines, modernising the cellar, and later pioneering the revival of Spanish viticulture after the Spanish Civil War. The modern era truly began under Miguel A. Torres, who joined the family business in the 1960s and brought a new philosophy — marrying traditional winemaking with scientific precision and a global outlook. Today, Familia Torres produces wines across Spain — from Penedès and Priorat in Catalonia to Ribera del Duero, Rioja, Rueda, and Galicia — as well as ventures in Chile and California. Yet every project is guided by the same values: excellence in vineyard management, respect for native varieties, and an unwavering commitment to environmental responsibility. The family has been a global leader in sustainable viticulture, replanting ancient Catalan grape varieties, reducing carbon emissions, and pioneering organic and regenerative farming across their estates. The range of wines is vast yet consistently detailed — from the approachable Sangre de Toro and Altos Ibéricos to the estate-grown icons like Mas La Plana, a pure Cabernet Sauvignon from Penedès that stunned the world in the 1979 Gault-Millau “Wine Olympics” by outperforming Bordeaux First Growths. Their Priorat wines, such as Salmos, showcase the power of slate and Mediterranean sunlight, while Purgatori from Costers del Segre channels the intensity of Spain’s inland climate through finesse and structure. Now led by Miguel Torres Maczassek, the fifth generation, the family continues to look forward — researching climate-resilient grape varieties, investing in renewable energy, and expanding their restoration of Spain’s vinous heritage. More than a brand, Familia Torres represents the heartbeat of modern Spanish wine: a bridge between past and future, craft and science, regional pride and global excellence. Every bottle tells a story of resilience, reinvention, and quiet mastery — a legacy built not on fame, but on the conviction that wine, like family, endures.
