Torres Mas La Plana — The Cabernet That Changed Spain

Mas La Plana is the wine that redefined what Spanish wine could be. Produced by Familia Torres from a single 29-hectare vineyard in the heart of Penedès, it is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that shattered expectations when it first appeared in the early 1970s — proving that Spain could produce wines to rival Bordeaux’s First Growths in class, depth, and longevity. The vineyard, located near Pacs del Penedès at around 300 metres above sea level, is planted on poor, stony soils that limit vigour and concentrate flavour. The Mediterranean climate brings generous sunlight, while cool nights preserve acidity and structure — a balance that gives the wine both power and poise. The vines, many of them over 40 years old, are organically and sustainably farmed, reflecting the Torres family’s long commitment to environmental stewardship. In the cellar, the approach is meticulous. The grapes are hand-harvested and sorted with precision, then fermented in stainless steel and concrete vats to preserve purity. Ageing takes place for around 18 months in fine-grained French oak barrels, followed by extended bottle maturation before release. The result is a Cabernet that speaks with a distinctly Mediterranean accent — elegant, aromatic, and seamlessly textured. In youth, Mas La Plana reveals a captivating bouquet of blackcurrant, cassis, and ripe plum, layered with cedar, graphite, cocoa, and wild herbs. The palate is refined and focused — dark fruit framed by velvety tannins and lifted by fresh acidity. Over time, it develops into a wine of haunting complexity: truffle, cigar box, dried herbs, and balsamic tones, all carried by a long, savoury finish that lingers with quiet authority. Mas La Plana achieved global recognition after the 1979 Gault-Millau “Wine Olympics”, where the 1970 vintage famously outscored top Bordeaux châteaux — a moment that placed Spain on the fine wine map. Decades later, it remains a benchmark for world-class Cabernet Sauvignon, combining European refinement with Mediterranean soul. Elegant, enduring, and unmistakably its own, Torres Mas La Plana is not just a great Spanish wine — it is a piece of wine history.
