Stored in a cellar and kept in perfect condition, this is a truly remarkable bottle. Having tasted it myself, I can honestly say it left me speechless for a long time. For a special occasion, this is the kind of Champagne that will not only elevate the moment, but be remembered long after it has passed. The second release in Piper-Heidsieck’s Hors-Série collection, Vintage 1982 follows the inaugural 1971 edition launched in autumn 2021. Released in November 2022, Hors-Série 1982 draws on the maison’s rich oenological heritage to offer a contemporary expression of one of Champagne’s most exceptional harvests. The 1982 vintage is regarded as one of the finest in the region’s history, shaped by steady weather conditions and an abundant harvest of remarkable quality. The grapes were in excellent condition across all varieties, showing the finesse, balance and grandeur that define a great Champagne year. Crafted from 12 crus, with Chardonnay sourced from the Côte des Blancs and Pinot Noir mainly from Verzy in the Montagne de Reims, the blend comprises 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. Bottled between 26 and 30 July 1983, it was aged on the lees for 39 years before being disgorged in January 2022 by cellar master Émilien Boutillat, with a dosage of 4 g/l. Only 2,500 bottles were produced. Vibrant and expressive, Hors-Série 1982 opens with luscious aromas of mirabelle plum, kumquat, dried pineapple and fresh quince, lifted by notes of ginger and bergamot tea. The palate is layered with honey, coffee bean, warm toast, crushed minerals and juicy plum, with smoky accents bringing balance and depth. Elegant, fresh and persistent on the finish, it pairs beautifully with rosemary-scented goat’s cheese or sautéed sole with lemon.
