Vilafonte Series M 2020

The merlot was exceptional in 2020 according to winemaker Chris de Vries, and Series M reverts to being merlot-led (43%), with 37% malbec, 14% cabernet sauvignon, 6% cabernet franc. The components of Series M were safely introduced to its ultimately 12% new French oak, with higher proportions of 2nd and 3rd fill barrels than previously, before the first Covid 19 lockdown. The wine shows beautiful, deep colour, fresh black plum perfume, velvet texture yet with a certain tension and energy, supported by dense but fine, sleek tannins, finishing with great poise and length. Production was larger than in the drought-hit 2019 vintage: 65 barrels. This wine will only be available on the home market in May 2023 and is offered to Wine Society members on an exclusive pre-release basis. Drink from 2023 to 2030. 14%
