Castillo de Ygay Gran Reserva Especial is considered the most prestigious red wine from Marqués de Murrieta, one of the most traditional and renowned wineries in Rioja. This wine is exclusively made as Gran Reserva in the vintages considered by the winery to be of excellent quality and in this one, in particular, it was made with 76% Tempranillo, 14% Garnacha, 7% Mazuelo and 3% Graciano. The grapes come from a higher altitude vineyard with vines from the 1940s, called La Plana, located at 485 meters altitude within the 300-hectare property surrounding the winery, at the southern point of Rioja Alta. Its winemaking process includes fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with daily remontage and pigeage processes. What most distinguishes the wines in this classification, however, is the aging process, since this wine went through four months in tanks, 45 months in 225-liter American oak barrels and 36 months in bottle before release.
