Dalamára Xinomavro Naoussa 2021 is a very good, organically farmed expression of Greece’s most age-worthy red grape: bright red fruit, savoury tomato/olive notes, firm but refined tannin, and enough acidity to develop for several more years. The Wine Society described it as “sensational,” with a drinking window of now to 2030. What to expect Grape / region: 100% Xinomavro from Naoussa, Macedonia, northern Greece; Naoussa PDO permits only Xinomavro. Producer: Kostis Dalamára, sixth-generation winemaker; the estate uses organic/biodynamic-leaning farming, spontaneous fermentation, low sulphur, no filtration, and 12 months in oak. Profile: Strawberry, cranberry, red cherry, sun-dried tomato, black olive, dried herbs and spice; expect a medium-bodied, high-acid, structured palate often compared with Nebbiolo. Technical details: 13.5% alcohol, natural cork, organic certification. Drinking and serving Drink 2026–2030, with the wine likely gaining savoury complexity—leather, tobacco, dried rose and earth—over the next few years. Decant for about an hour if opening now, especially alongside richer food. Best pairings: Lamb chops, slow-cooked lamb shoulder, or Greek-style braised lamb Moussaka, beef stifado, or mushroom-based braises Aged hard cheeses; it is less ideal for delicate fish or very spicy dishes. Quick verdict This is a strong “drink some now, hold some” wine rather than a showy, immediately opulent red. Its appeal is precision and savoury tension—excellent with food, and particularly worthwhile if you enjoy Barolo, Barbaresco, or structured Etna Rosso.
