Penfolds Bin 138 2017 is a Barossa Valley GSM-style red—68% Shiraz, 23% Grenache, and 9% Mataro (Mourvèdre)—matured for 12–15 months in seasoned French and American oak hogsheads. It is full-bodied, savoury, and Rhône-inspired rather than a blockbuster Barossa Shiraz. Region: Barossa Valley, South Australia; 14.5% ABV. Character: Candied cherry/red-berry fruit with black olive, roasted meat, earth and spice; soft, dusty tannins and a firm but drinkable structure. Oak: No overt new-oak character—seasoned hogsheads are used to preserve varietal expression. It received 93 points from James Suckling.
