2000 Xavier Vignon, Chateauneuf-du-Pape

The 2000 Xavier Vignon Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a mature, polished Southern Rhône red—Grenache-led, rich but still structured, and generally regarded as ready to drink now. James Suckling scored it 94/100, describing wild blackberry, potpourri, tobacco, and dark chocolate, with firm velvety tannins and “plenty of energy and structure.” Wooden case of 6 purchased via direct allocation. Selling one bottle. Producer: Xavier Vignon, a highly regarded Rhône consultant/négociant rather than a classic estate owner; he sources fruit from established Châteauneuf terroirs. Blend: 80% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, and 5% Cinsault/Syrah. Alcohol: about 15%. Elevage: raised in wood vessels, including foudres and demi-muids, giving it a more polished, Burgundian-influenced profile than a rustic, all-concrete Châteauneuf. Tasting profile Expect a developed, savory, full-bodied wine: dark berry fruit, dried flowers, tobacco, chocolate/praline, leather, liquorice, truffle, and spice. It retains fresh acidity and rounded tannins, so it should feel complex rather than merely heavy. Drinking window Vignon’s own site lists it as “à boire dès à présent”—drink now—while Suckling’s 2021 note said “drink or hold.” At 26 years old, I would treat it as at or near peak. Bottom line: a very good, distinctive mature CdP—more elegant and savoury than blockbuster fruit-driven—and worth opening in the near term rather than cellaring further.
