Gaja Sperss, Barolo 2014 – 1.5 Litre Magnum

A rare and highly collectable 1.5-litre magnum of Gaja Sperss 2014, one of the great wines of Piedmont from legendary Italian producer Angelo Gaja. Sperss comes from vineyards in Serralunga d'Alba, an area renowned for producing powerful, structured and exceptionally long-lived Barolo. The name Sperss means “nostalgia” in the Piedmontese dialect. Predominantly Nebbiolo, the 2014 is an elegant and beautifully structured wine, displaying cherry and dark fruit alongside tobacco, liquorice, spice, truffle and earthy notes. Fine tannins and fresh acidity give the wine excellent balance and considerable ageing potential. Critic scores: • 95/100 – Wine Enthusiast • 95/100 – James Suckling • 94/100 – Robert Parker's Wine Advocate • 94/100 – Decanter • 93/100 – Vinous • 92/100 – Wine Spectator The 2014 is now within its drinking window but retains excellent potential for further development, particularly in the slower-maturing magnum format. 1.5 litre Magnum – equivalent to two standard 75cl bottles. A superb large-format bottle from one of Italy's most prestigious producers, combining the power of Serralunga Barolo with Gaja's trademark elegance and finesse. I bought this wine eight years ago from a well-known dealer and it's been at London City Bond ever since. Check my other large format wines.
